Can mold grow after water damage?

Yes. Mold can begin growing within 24 to 48 hours of water exposure, so a water leak that is not dried quickly can turn into a mold problem. The key is removing the water, drying the structure, and fixing the source that let moisture in.

    How fast mold can start

Mold needs moisture, and it does not need long to use it. Industry guidance cited on our water damage page notes that mold colonies can begin forming within a day of water exposure, and our crews treat the first 24 to 48 hours as the window to prevent that growth. That is why extraction and drying start as soon as possible after a leak, overflow, or storm. A stain that looks small can hide damp material behind it, especially in walls and ceilings.

Where mold is likely to show up

San Antonio humidity and sudden storms make mold a year-round concern here, not a seasonal one. The usual hiding spots are bathrooms, closets on exterior walls, attics, and crawl spaces, along with areas around slow leaks under slabs or behind cabinets. Signs include a musty odor that returns after cleaning, visible discoloration that comes back after you wipe it, water stains, and increased allergy symptoms. If you spot any of these, an on-site assessment is the next step.

What to do if you suspect mold

We inspect before we quote, because where the moisture came from is what decides whether the remediation holds. AST is a Texas TDLR-licensed Mold Remediation Contractor (RCO1739) and follows the IICRC S520 standard, using HEPA-filtered negative-air containment, moisture-source verification, and removal of affected material. We do remediation only. If formal testing or assessment is needed, we refer you to an independent licensed Texas Mold Assessor so the results stay unbiased. Fixing the water source is part of the job, because mold returns when the moisture does.

    Preventing mold after a leak

The best defense is to dry quickly and keep the home dry afterward. After a leak or overflow, extraction and drying should begin as soon as possible so moisture does not stay trapped in walls, flooring, or cabinetry. Fix the source, whether that is a supply line, an appliance, a roof leak, or a slow slab leak, because mold returns when moisture returns. If you see new staining or notice a musty odor after a repair, have the area checked. A moisture reading on the framing and materials shows whether the area is actually dry.
